One holding company.
Three ways into African AI.
Black Synapses owns and operates an AI agency, a not-for-profit arm housing an incubator and a research lab, and a portfolio of ventures. Each works a different edge of the same problem — making artificial intelligence useful in places the tooling was never designed for.
Applied AI doesn't fail for technical reasons.
It fails because the data infrastructure isn't there, the talent leaves for elsewhere, and the use cases don't match tools built for other economies. No single firm fixes that. So we built three, and put them under one roof.
Commercial work funds it
Benin Data sells real AI systems to real clients — private and public sector. That revenue underwrites everything else in the group.
Research directs it
The Artificial Wisdom lab, inside Racines & AW, asks what AI should optimise for when the values encoded upstream aren't yours. Its findings shape what the other entities build.
The nonprofit widens the door
Racines & AW turns graduating students into working practitioners, and its ventures graduate into a for-profit portfolio once they stand on their own.
What sits under Black Synapses.
Three entities, each with its own mandate, leadership and operating rhythm. Black Synapses holds them, capitalises them, and keeps their work pointed in the same direction.
Benin Data
AI consulting, infrastructure and training for private and public organisations across Bénin and West Africa. The group's commercial engine.

Where startups born in Racines land once they stand on their own — the group's for-profit portfolio, from fashion to real estate to AI platforms.

It is the group's commercial engine. Benin Data designs and deploys enterprise data and AI platforms in environments with little or no prior digitisation, then moves client organisations from experimentation to production-grade systems. Its work rests on five pillars, broken into twelve specialist practices.
- Staff training. Day sessions tailored by profession or sector, plus a six-week programme teaching teams to spot AI optimisation opportunities in their own work. Two executive tracks: a four-hour strategic intensive and a six-week transformation track ending in an operational AI roadmap.
- Digital transformation. Modernising tools, processes and ways of working through AI and digital technology — for efficiency, transparency and competitiveness.
- Database engineering. Design, structuring and optimisation of databases to guarantee the storage, quality, security and availability of business-critical data.
- AI engineering for decision support. Descriptive, predictive and prescriptive analytics; computer vision; audio intelligence; natural language processing; generative AI; agentic AI — plus dashboards that turn data into decisions at a glance.
- Data-driven web & mobile development. Custom applications wiring client data and AI models directly into the interfaces their teams work in.
Racines & AW
The not-for-profit arm. Incubator, research lab, community initiatives.

Racines & AW exists because good AI products in this market don't get built by accident, a generation of graduates has nowhere to practise what it just learned — and intelligence is not the same as wisdom.
It is the group's not-for-profit arm, and everything under it is financed strictly on that basis. The incubator develops public-facing AI startups from concept to first users: a repeatable model for taking a problem, building a production platform around it, and proving it in the market. Once a venture stands on its own, it graduates into Ventures, the group's for-profit portfolio — the mission stays here, the businesses move on.
The same roof houses Artificial Wisdom, the research lab building AI grounded in African values, languages and decision-making traditions — not translated into them after the fact. The lab sets the design constraints; the incubator's ventures and Benin Data's deployments inherit them as operating standards.
And its third mandate is human. Racines & AW is deliberately structured as an outlet for young people leaving university — a place where graduates join real teams shipping real systems — alongside the group's other community commitments: leadership, civism, and collaborations across the ecosystem.
- Venture studio. Rapid development of AI platforms across multiple sectors — incubated here, commercialised under Ventures.
- Artificial Wisdom lab. Alignment research, language & context, and governance frameworks fit for the region — applied, not aspirational.
- Graduate pathway. Structured entry for students leaving college and university into paid, production-grade work.
- Leadership. Mentorship, panels, and the institutional work that outlasts any single project.
- Community civism. Supporting institutions, public awareness, and the participation that makes technology adoption stick.
- Collaborations. Partnerships with the digital and AI communities of Bénin and the wider region on shared-interest work.
The startups that graduated from Racines.
Every venture born in the Racines & AW incubator lands here once it stands on its own — the group's for-profit portfolio. Different sectors, one method: take a broken market, re-architect it around data, law and craft, and run it as a real business.
Tailleurie
An AI-enabled digital manufacturing platform overhauling the made-to-measure industry — tailors, designers, fabric sellers, delivery workers and clients on one data-driven chain — in Bénin, West Africa and the diaspora.
Penthouse La Palmeraie
A rental real-estate project of exclusively penthouse apartments across African cities — starting with Cotonou, Bénin.
Xoxoya
Reforming the real-estate agent's trade by re-architecting it around the laws that govern the sector — so démarcheurs professionalise, prospective tenants stop getting scammed, and landlords respect the law. Better quality of life for residents, tourists and immigrants alike.
Xixa
A virtual cash register and AI stock management tool for small merchants — inventory built from simple photos of incoming stock — growing into a platform that captures merchant and consumer transactions, so both can build a financial track record and access credit from banks and lending institutions.
Kléounh
A game that automates knowledge acquisition through text summarisation — summarise successive paragraphs on a subject to absorb it naturally and deeply, while the best summary wins between two players, or between the player and the machine.
Maison de mode
A fashion house carrying African culture outward through the lens of Bénin — four brands under one roof: Bolddies for Gen Z, Le Patricien for millennials, Le Fils de Désiré for luxury, and Sa Gouda for local tradition.
Let's build the useful version.
